Beaver-felled tree. The European beaver (Castor fiber) is a water-dwelling rodent. It chops down trees using its powerful incisors to get at the leaves and bark it eats. Branches are also stuck together with mud to form a dam that widens and raises the water level of the river or freshwater lake on which it lives. The European beaver was brought to the edge of extinction by hunting. Through conservation efforts, however,it is now found in the Nordic countries,Germany,France,Austria and Switzerland | |
