Proboscis monkey. Male proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) sitting on a branch. The proboscis monkey is endemic to Borneo and the Mentawai Islands of Sumatra and because of loss of their mangrove homes, have become endangered throughout their range. It is estimated that less than 10,000 remain in Borneo. These monkeys take their name from the males' huge noses, which begin to enlarge after they reach maturity. The nose serves to add resonance to the monkeys' calls, and it straightens out as they emit a loud "honk". The female's noses are smaller. Photographed in Bako National Park,Sarawak,Malaysia | |
