Little bee eater (Merops pusillus) perched on a branch. Little bee eaters are tiny members of the bee eater bird family (Meropidae),with a mass of only 15 grams and a length of only 18 centimetres. They are found in the open woodland and savannah habitats of sub-Saharan Africa. Little bee eaters live in pairs and small groups, nesting in a small burrow or an abandoned aardvark hole. Bee eaters are related to kingfishers, and despite the name, they feed on a variety of insects. They get most of the water they need from the insects they catch, and rarely drink.
