Nubian vulture in a tree. Nubian vulture (Torgos tracheliotus) perched on a branch of an acacia (Acacia sp.) tree. These large birds, which can have a wingspan approaching three metres, live in southern and central Africa. They nest on large platforms of sticks at the tops of trees, but spend the day soaring high above the plains. They feed almost exclusively on carrion. Their excellent eyesight allows them to spot dead animals from great distances, and they rapidly swoop down to feed on them. They follow large herds of animals, and eat the remains of those killed by predators. Their heads are bald to prevent their feathers being soiled while feeding.
