Vultures (subfamily Aegypiinae) feeding on a scavenged kill. Vultures use their long hooked beaks to tear through the skin of dead animals and rip off chunks of flesh. They have fewer feathers on their heads to prevent them from becoming coated in blood as they feed on the internal organs. Vultures live in open country, circling high above the ground as they search for the corpses of large herd-forming mammals. When they find carrion they eat large amounts, enabling them to survive without feeding for several days. Their digestive system also enables them to safely eat decaying meat.
