Greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) taking off. Because of their size, flamingos must run along the surface of the water to gain sufficient momentum to take off and fly. The greater flamingo inhabits salty lakes in southern Europe, and throughout Africa, the Middle East and western Asia. It can reach a height of almost 150 centimetres. P. ruber feeds mainly on tiny shrimp- like animals, which it sifts from the water with its large bill. Pigments absorbed from the shrimp account for its pink colour | |
