Cape gannet (Morus capensis) colony. Gannets are seabirds that nest in gannetries (gannet colonies) numbering hundreds of birds on rocky cliffs and islands. They feed on fish such as herring and mackerel,plunge diving under the sea from heights of up to 30 metres. Their tapering tail and streamlined body are adaptations to this mode of fishing. Gannets are aggressive birds with a deep,harsh call. They can reach 80 centimetres in length. This gannet has a limited distribution around the coasts of Africa.
