Adelie penguin (Pygoscelis adeliae) feeding its chick (left). It is regurgitating undigested food from its crop. Adelie penguins normally raise two chicks. The male and female take turns to incubate the eggs and feed the young. While incubating they may fast for over 20 days. Adelie penguins are highly social birds. Their colonies can contain tens of thousands of nests. They have elaborate territorial and courtship rituals. They dive in shallow coastal waters to feed on krill and small fish. They are found around the Antarctic coast and nearby islands. Photographed near Anvers Island,Antarctica | |
