Great crested newt (Triturus cristatus) basking on a rock. This newt is found throughout Great Britain,Europe,north of the Alps and the Black Sea. It is a protected species in the UK due to diminishing habitat. The female lays up to 300 eggs on aquatic plants in ponds and pools. Outside the breeding season great crested newts are very terrestrial,seeking shelter under rocks and logs.
