Agalychnis scutatus. This frog,a native of the Amazon rainforest,is camouflaged to hide among decaying leaves on the forest floor. Although a member of the tree frog family (Hylidae),it lives on the ground, where it preys on other frogs. The species is very rare and disappears from areas of the forest disturbed by human activity. It has a low reproductive rate, producing only a single batch of under 20 eggs each year, which are carried on the female's back until they hatch into tiny froglets. Photographed in Ecuador | |
