Angel fishes. Coloured X-ray of a pair of Angel fish Pterophyllum sp.,facing each other. Angel fish are bony fish (Osteichthyes) endowed with a bony skeleton. The skeleton consists of a skull of bony plates, with an orbital cavity containing the eye. The vertebral column has long bony spines and a rib cage,to which muscles are attached. Elongated bony rays are found in the dorsal and ventral fins and in the tail. Angel fish possess a laterally flattened body, adapted for their habit of living among high, swaying, aquatic plants. These they weave through when swimming and are usually camouflaged against with striped body colours. Magnification: unknown | |
