Sea urchin. Spiny black sea urchin washed up on a beach. Sea urchins are bottom-feeding creatures of the phylum Echinodermata. These animals are characterised by their unusual five-fold radial symmetry (not seen here). Sea urchins have spiny shells which protect them from predators.
