Polydesmid millipede. View of a polydesmid millipede crawling across the forest floor. These animals inhabit forest floors in tropical areas. They are completely blind. They mainly feed on decaying vegetable matter, although fruit and dead meat may be eaten if they come across them. Polydesmid millipedes are recognised by their flattened bodies and deep segmentation, and they have four legs on each body segment. Polydesmids are also known to secrete toxic hydrocyanic acid to deter predators. Photographed in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve,Costa Rica | |
