Black millipede (Diplopoda),from Mombassa,Kenya, crawling on an Indian bean tree leaf. Small mites are seen on the body of the millipede. Millipedes are segmented creatures, the number varying with the species. They have numerous legs (red fringe) seen under the black segmented body. The head capsule carries the short segmented antennae & two lateral eyes, which consist of aggregations of simple eyes (ocelli). Tucked away under the head are the powerful mandibles. They inhabit moist environments, living mostly on algae, rotting vegetable matter,& dead animals. They are protected from natural enemies by their tough ectoskeleton | |
