Mite on honeybee. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a mite (Varroa sp.,upper centre) on the thorax of a honeybee (Apis mellifera). Mites are related to ticks and more distantly to spiders,in having four pairs of legs. Honeybee mites feed on the body fluid of adult bees and their pupae. Female mites lay their eggs inside the wax brood cells that contain larvae. The mites can cause significant damage to a bee's development and infestation of a hive with mites can cause eventual destruction of the colony. Magnification: x9 when printed 10 cm wide | |
