False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a greenhouse red spider mite Tetranychus sp,climbing over the surface of a leaf,Weigela florida. An economic pest and plant parasite, the mite is found on vegetable crops, fruit trees and flowers. They feed on the leaves (sap) causing them to mottle, turn yellow and fall off. Spider mites spin a web across the leaf surface which secures and protects them against predators. They are chemically controlled using organophosphorus, although some resistance has developed. Another method is biological control, using a natural predator,a mite called Phytoseiulus persimilis. Magnification x84 at 6x4.5cm size | |
