| Bullet-proof web. Conceptual image of the web of a golden orb spider (Nephila sp.) stopping a bullet,representing the use of spider silk in bullet- proof vests. Golden orb spiders can spin webs over two metres across,and their silk is amongst the strongest known. Weight for weight it is stronger than steel,and the webs often catch small birds. It is hoped that studying the structure of the silk will lead to new methods of producing synthetic fibres of a similar strength.
