False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the spinnerets (silk-spinning structures) of a spider,Araneus sp. Spiders can have a maximum of six spinnerets borne in a group at the tip of the abdomen. Five spinnerets are seen in this species of spider. Behind these structures,in the base of the abdomen, are silk glands which secrete silk through ducts to the spinnerets. The silk ducts end in tiny spigots which are here, haired. Tiny silk fibres combine to form a single thread which is emitted as a liquid, but quickly becomes solidified when exposed to the air. The silk may be used for a feeding web or spun for some other purpose. Magnification: x10 at 35mm size | |
