Aedes aegypti mosquito head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an adult Aedes aegypti mosquito, the principle vector of yellow fever. The antennae protrude from between the compound eyes (upper centre). The mouthparts consist of two short mandibular palps (lower centre) either side of the proboscis (bottom centre). The proboscis contains the piercing and sucking instruments necessary to obtain a blood meal from humans and other animals. This mosquito is found in most tropical and sub- tropical regions.
