Malaria mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a female specimen of the mosquito species Anopheles gambiae. The females of this species are carriers of the malaria parasite,Plasmodium sp.. This micrograph shows the mosquito's abdomen swollen after a meal of human blood. The female is distinguished from the male of the species by the relative sparseness of the bristles on her antennae. The proboscis, consists of the piercing and sucking instruments, called stylets, which are seen as a slender red tube under the compound eye. The compound eye is here coloured green.
