Female yellow fever mosquito,Aedes aegypti, feeding on the human arm. The mosquito's slender stylets, normally concealed within the sheath of the proboscis, can be seen inserted in the skin, drinking blood. The sheath is bent backward in an arc out of the way. The female mosquito is the vector of an arbovirus which is the cause of yellow fever in tropical Africa and northern South America. The disease often proves fatal although recovery does confer immunity from further attacks. Male mosquitoes feed on nectar and juices, not blood, and therefore do not transmit the disease | |
