Surgical maggots. Surgeon's gloved hand holding a vial containing surgical maggots (Lucilia sericata). These maggots are used to clean wounds,as they eat dead and dying flesh and leave healthy areas. They clean the wound far more efficiently than is possible with drugs or other methods. These maggots are antiseptic, and keep the area free of bacteria. Only this species of maggot is used, and they are bred for the purpose in sterile conditions. Research is under way into isolating the digestive and antiseptic properties in the maggots' saliva, with the goal of being able to replace the living creatures with a cream.
