Head louse. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a human head louse Pediculus humanus capitis, with an egg. The louse is clinging to a human hair. An egg (nit) has been laid on the hair (lower right). The vase-like egg has a perforated lid, which is removed by the emerging nymph. Adult female lice lay between 80-100 eggs in a lifetime. The human head louse lives within human hair and sucks blood from the scalp. The louse has biting mouthparts, antennae, and its 3 pairs of legs are clawed for clinging to hair. It causes itchy spots on the scalp, dermatitis, and sometimes bacterial infection. Treatment is with shampoo preparations. Magnification: x35 at 6x6cm size. x55 at 4x4ins | |
