Light micrograph of Cypris sp.,a small, freshwater crustacean of the subclass Ostracoda. Ostracods have a hinged, bivalve carapace which completely encloses the body, leaving only the two pairs of antennae protruding (right); these are used to propel the animal through the water. Most ostracods feed on rotting plant and animal material, although some are predatory. Ostracods show no close relationship with any of the other crustacean subclasses (including the waterfleas). They form an independant branch of the Crustacea which first arose in the upper Cambrian period, about 500 million years ago | |
