American lobster (Homarus americanus) on the seabed. This lobster inhabits the eastern coast of North America. It is nocturnal, hiding in a den by day and emerging at night to scavenge and feed on invertebrates. Its claws have evolved to perform specific tasks. One (centre right) has large teeth-like,flat surfaces used to crush its prey. The other claw (centre left) has fine teeth-like serrations used to cut and shred its food. It may grow up to a metre in length, but is now rare due to extensive fishing. Photographed in the Bay of Fundy,Canada | |
