Copepod crustacean. Light micrograph of the nauplius larva of a copepod crustacean (subclass Copepoda). This is the first stage in the life cycle of a copepod. The nauplius stage is free- swimming, moving by jerky backwards movements of its elongated antennae (upper left and right) and its limbs (centre left and right). The body of the larva is covered in hair-like appendages (not seen),which increase its resistance to the water and help it to float. Copepods moult 6 times as a nauplius, then another 5 times before they become adults. Dark field illumination. Magnification unknown | |
