Tentacles of Obelia. Light micrograph of the colonial hydroid Obelia sp.,showing the cross- section detail of its tentacles with stinging cells. Two tentacles are viewed (circular) which contain spherical stinging cells known as nemato- cysts. Some nematocysts have released stinging threads visible around each tentacle,by which prey is captured. The tentacles belong to a feeding polyp (at lower right) found on the branching colony of Obelia. Feeding polyps secure food for the colony, while other polyps take part in reproduction. The tiny branches of Obelia,up to 4cm in length, occur in water on stones and seaweed. Magnification: x131 at 35mm size. Magnification: x500 at 4x5inch size | |
