Malaria parasites. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of the stomach wall of a mosquito (Anopheles stephansi) infected with the malaria parasite Plasmodium. The mosquito stomach wall is coloured brown. Rounded objects (pink) attached to the stomach are oocysts,a stage in the life cycle of the malaria parasite. Oocysts grow and the contents (blue) form into the sporozoite stage of malaria; when the oocyst bursts these sporozoites are dispersed. They reach the salivary gland of the mosquito where they are transmitted to humans when the female mosquito takes a human blood meal. Magnification: x1000 at 6x7cm size. x3,000 at 8x10ins | |
