Sun animalcule. Light micrograph of the protozoan Actinosphaerium eichhorni, belonging to the order Heliozoa, referred to as sun animalcules because of their spherical body and radiating arms. The rays are long, thin pseudopodia (false feet),attached by 'axial filaments',which are buried deep in the protoplasm of the cell's body. The pseudopodia are used to capture prey, bringing it to the cell body where it can be digested. Sun animalcules mainly live in fresh water. Magnification unknown | |
