Light micrograph of blood infected with the parasitic protozoan,Trypanosoma rhodesiense, one of the agents of African sleeping sickness. The trypanosomes appear here as elongated,ribbon-like objects, stained purple; numerous red blood cells appear grey. T. rhodesiense is transmitted by bites from the tsetse fly Glossina morsitans: the other species causing sleeping sickness,T. gambiense,is transmitted by G. palpalis. After completion of their insect life-cycle stages, trypanosomes appear & multiply in the bloodstream. The characteristic lethargy caused by meningo- encephalitis appears after about a month.
