Electrostatic generator,19th century artwork. Static electricity is generated by friction from a 3- metre-wide wheel of plate glass (upper centre) rubbing past three equally-spaced iron 'rubbers'. The revolving glass plate runs off steam power and revolves at 40 revolutions per minute. The machine could produce electric sparks up to 50 centimetres in length.
