Supermarine Spitfire. This model of the Supermarine Spitfire plane has been inverted and suspended inside a wind tunnel for aerodynamic testing. It has been fitted with experimental high-altitude wings that have extended wing tips designed to give a greater service ceiling (altitude above which a plane cannot climb faster than a given rate). The high-altitude wing was used extensively on later photo-reconnaissance versions of the Spitfire. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory,Teddington,UK,in 1940 | |
