Micro-rocket engine. Fingers holding a micro- rocket engine prototype. This engine has been developed by Adam London,a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),USA. The engine, which is etched from a silicon wafer,is 3 mm thick and 1. 5 centimetres across. By burning gaseous methane fuel and oxygen,it is hoped that one of these engines could produce 15 newtons of thrust. This would mean that the micro- rocket would have about 20 times the thrust per unit weight as the space shuttles' main engine. It is estimated that 800 micro-rockets could carry a 1000 kilogram vehicle into space | |
