Radar on a chip. View of the Micropower Impulse Radar (or MIR),a fully self-contained radar unit which fits on a 4cm square circuit board. Using two domestic AA-size batteries,MIR has a range of up to 200 feet. The present unit cost is about $10,compared with the $40,000 price of an equivalent conventional radar. MIR is being studied for a multitude of uses; a parking aid for cars warning of obstructions (as here),a detector for reinforcing bars in concrete,or a heart motion detector for medical diagnosis. MIR was invented by Tom McEwan,an electronics engineer at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory,USA | |
