Air flow around a hovering plane. Supercomputer simulation of the air flow around a hovering Harrier fighter plane. The Harrier has moveable jet exhaust nozzles, which allow it to alter the direction of its thrust. During hovering flight, the nozzles are directed downwards. The air flow this causes is very important,as hot air rebounding off the ground may be taken up by the engines, which could cause the aircraft to crash. Models such as this allow the air flow to be studied so that pilots and designers can see what situations must be avoided | |
