ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer). Technician changing a tube on ENIAC,an early electronic computer. ENIAC was designed and built in the 1940s by the University of Pennsylvania for the US Army's Ballistics Research Laboratory (BRL). The computer contained around 19,000 vacuum tubes, several of which burned out each day and had to be replaced. Some thought this problem rendered the computer useless, although the designers claimed the tubes were easily located and replaced. ENIAC solved ballistics calculations and other military problems | |
