486 chip. Macrophotograph of a 486 microprocessor silicon chip (or integrated circuit),used in 486 personal computers. Microscopic electronic components have been imprinted onto the surface of the silicon by various deposition and etching processes. Fine wires (usually made of gold) connect the microprocessor to the blue links, these lead to the connector pins of the motherboard (purple). The whole structure is usually encased in a protective coating. Integrated circuits can be made much smaller than non-integrated circuits which consist of separate components.
