Equipment being installed in subterranean basalt caverns under the Hanford Reservation,Washington,to test the viability of near-surface basalt formations as a repository for nuclear wastes. The basalt is being examined for reactions to extreme heat and for movement. Here, the roof is being drilled to accommodate a device to check for movement. A planned "live" test involves storing two canisters of spent fuel and one canister of vitrified high-level waste. At the end of this test all test equipment and waste would be removed.
