Tidal mill. Sluice gates and tide pool of a traditional tidal mill. The mill worked by opening sluice gates (at right) to allow water into the pond (at left) when the tide was rising. When the tide began to fall, the sluice gates were closed, keeping a reservoir of water whose release could be controlled to power the mill. Photographed on the estuary of the River Rance in France. This tidal mill was one of several in the area and it was the last to close. The River Rance is now bridged downstream of this mill by a barrage which generates electricity | |
