False-colour optical image of the cluster of galaxies Abell 1060. It is formed by thousands of galaxies seen here as elongated and distorted objects and lies some 150 million light years away in the constellation of Hydra. Like other large clusters of galaxies Abell 1060 emits X-rays. This emission is thought to be generated by hot gas (10 million Kelvin) which fills the inner part of the cluster. The colour code runs from blue for the dimmer optical regions to yellow and turquoise for the brighter areas | |
