Interacting galaxies 3C 321. X-ray image of hot gas (purple) in the two galaxies in the 3C 321 system, which includes a powerful radio jet (not visible at X-ray wavelengths). The X-ray observations show that both galaxies contain supermassive black holes undergoing a phase of rapid growth. It is the supermassive black hole in the galaxy at lower left that is generating the radio jet, which is impacting the smaller companion galaxy. This image was obtained with the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). 3C 321 is 1.25 billion light years from Earth,in the constellation Serpens Caput. For a series of images of 3C 321,from a study carried out in 2007,including visible, radio, ultraviolet and X-ray observations, see images R826/124 to R826/130 | |
