Supernova remnant (SNR) G292.0+1.8,Chandra X-ray image. A supernova remnant is an expanding shell of dust and gas that forms following the explosive death of a massive star. The superheated gas and dust are emitting X-rays,seen as the coloured areas in this image. The relative X-ray energy is is colour-coded: red (low),through orange and green to blue (high). This SNR is around 20,000 light years from Earth,in the constellation Centaurus. Image obtained in 2006,using the ACIS instrument on the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO). The optical data (white) is from the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) | |
