Supernova remnant. Chandra X-ray image of a ring of oxygen and neon in the supernova remnant E0102- 72. This ring has been expanding for around 1000 years. A supernova occurs when a star's nuclear reactions cease, and it collapses under its own gravity. Collapsing material rebounds off a newly-formed neutron star at the supernova's heart to form the expanding shells of gas. E0102-72 lies in the Small Magellanic Cloud,a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way,some 190,000 light years away in the constellation Tucana. This image was taken by the High Energy Transmission Grating spectrometer (HETG) and the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS). Chandra is an X-ray telescope satellite | |
