Voyager 2 composite image of Uranus, taken with separate violet, blue & orange filters,on January 14,1986. The bright streak near the rim of the planet at top right is a cloud. False colour was used to highlight this feature and bring out details. The different colours of the image imply variations in vertical structure. One possibility is that the Uranian atmosphere contains smog-like constituents and some colour differences may represent differences in how these molecules are distributed. The dark ring feature at the bottom of the picture is a shadow cast by dust in the camera optics. NASA 5x4 number 86 HC 55 | |
