Titan's north pole cloud. Cassini images of the huge cloud system (orange) covering the north pole region of Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. This cloud system was predicted in theoretical models, but this is the first time it has been observed in detail. The clouds are thought to be the source of the hydrocarbon lakes discovered on the surface. Titan has a diameter of 5150 kilometres. Its thick atmosphere is mostly nitrogen with traces of methane. These images were obtained in both infrared and visible light, using Cassini's mapping spectrometer. Image data obtained on 29 December 2006,at a distance of 90,000 kilometres | |
