Jupiter from Europa. Artwork of the planet Jupiter from above the surface of Europa, one of its moons. The surface of Europa is made of water ice. There are no large impact craters; it is thought that meteorites make a crater which fills with liquid water and then freezes. Large cracks criss- cross the surface, through which water may well up and freeze. Such activity means the surface is constantly refreshed and smoothed. Europa is thought to have a huge ocean of liquid water beneath the ice. If there is geothermal activity at the seabed then life similar to that around hydrothermal vents on Earth may exist there | |
