Europa. Galileo spacecraft enhanced-colour image of the surface of Europa,a moon of Jupiter. White & blue regions were blanketed with ice particles ejected from the Pwyll crater 1000 kilometres (km) away when it was formed by an object impact. In these areas are some small (less than 500 metres (m) diameter) craters caused by large blocks of ice from Pwyll. Their impact disrupted Europa's icy crust, causing mineral-rich water from its interior to coat the rest of the area in red-brown deposits. Image taken by Galileo's Solid State Imaging camera from a distance of 5350 km on 20 February 1997. The image covers 30x70km and the smallest visible features are about 54 m across | |
