Martian rock. Microscopic image of the surface of the Martian rock 'Adirondack',taken by the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit, which landed on Mars on 4 January 2004. Spirit used a stainless steel brush to wipe away dust (some seen at left) from the rock's surface. A rock abrasion tool will expose new layers of rock for chemical analysis by Spirit's spectrometers. Such investigations may reveal how the rock was formed and whether this region of the Martian surface was once covered in water. This image measures 3cm across | |
