Fractured crater,Mars Express perspective image. The crater is 27.5 kilometres across and some 800 metres deep. It is not yet known what caused the fracture lines, but it is thought that they might have formed due to contraction. This could be due to the ground drying out, stress from freezing,or the cooling of molten rock (lava). The craters on the Martian surface formed due to asteroid impacts from space, most occurring millions of years ago. This crater is near Valles Marineris.
