Martian caldera,Mars Express satellite image. Perspective view of the caldera of Olympus Mons on Mars. Olympus Mons volcano is the largest mountain in the solar system at around 600 kilometres (km) wide. The caldera (volcanic crater) measures about 90 km across and is nearly 3 km deep. It contains several smaller craters formed by collapses. Data for this image were obtained on 21 January 2004 by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on ESA's Mars Express,from an altitude of 273 km. Image R350/235 is an overhead view of this area | |
